The GEOTEC Multi-institutional Project
Overview
GEOTEC is a Brazilian multi-institutional project
to develop GIS tools and techniques.
This project started in the second semester of
1994, and involves universities,
research centers and industries.
Its goals are to develop prototypes and tools to solve
specific problems in geoprocessing, integrating results from
several domains (computer graphics, image processing, database
systems, artificial intelligence, computational geometry,
distributed systems and networks).
This project involves experts from different areas, both in
Computer Science and in Geosciences.
In the Computer Science side, the project involves researchers in
databases, computer networks, software engineering,
artificial intelligence, computational geometry,
man-machine interfaces and image processing.
These experts will cooperate along five major research and
development lines: application design and development;
interfaces; image processing,
data analysis and spatial processing functions;
database systems; spatial access methods and algorithms,
and data communication across distributed systems.
GEOTEC's major institutional sponsor is CNPq (Brazilian
National Research Council), which provides funding for the
project activities under the PROTEM-CC program.
Overall goals
End-users (such as biologists, geographers, planners, engineers)
are experts on the application domain, but are usually not
familiar with GIS.
Thus, the project's goal is to ultimately
provide these users with
a friendly and extensible GIS
environment, with special purpose tools for specific
application domains (e.g., agriculture).
The project started in 1994, and concentrates on the following issues:
- Production of innovative scientific results, which will
be made public by means of different types of publications
(papers, technical reports, theses);
- Development of prototypes and automated tools for sol-
ving specific issues in geoprocessing;
- Incorporation of new technologies to
products under development, including the
SPRING geoprocessing system (INPE) for environmental and
urban applications as well as the SAGRE system
(CPqD-TELEBRAS) for management of urban
telephonic networks.
