Brief summary
Data on human activities have been widely collected to inform and influence actions and decisions. The ability to interact with this amount of data is essential for people and organizations to get the best out of that information. This requires adequate systems for collecting, storing and managing information that assist in visual interaction with data in an easy, effective and pleasant way for users. A new area of study called Human-Data Interaction (IHD) has emerged to investigate how people interact with data. This Ph.D. thesis aims to investigate ways to guide designers to the design and evaluation of data-based applications with enhanced IHD experience. In our approach, we combine the knowledge of experienced designers materialized in guidelines and the participation of stakeholders in the design process. This Ph.D. thesis also investigated the evaluation of User Experience (UX) in systems based on IHD. Our study on IHD emphasized the aspects of information visualization. Two case studies were conducted that addressed the phases of design and evaluation of information visualization applications. The main contributions of this Ph.D. thesis include (i) Identification and description of research challenges in the area of IHD. We conducted a complete systematic review of the literature to understand the state of the art in the area; (ii) Compilation of a set of IHD design guidelines to help designers build an appropriate visual interaction with the data; (iii) a design process adapted for IHD-based applications for complex and common sense domains; (iv) Participatory practices to deal with the design and evaluation of the interaction with the data; and (v) an instrument for evaluating UX for data-based applications. The evaluations performed in both case studies demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach to the design and evaluation of IHD-based applications.
