Brief summary
The issue of energy-conscious computing has grown in relevance recently, especially in relation to battery-limited mobile devices with limited autonomy, to the point of becoming one of the main problems to be addressed in the specification of mobile communication technologies. At the same time, by prioritizing packet switching in response to the increased demand for data on mobile networks, LTE has achieved network traffic dominance among mobile communication technologies. The increase in data traffic on mobile devices combined with the energy limitations of their batteries puts pressure on LTE for energy-efficient solutions. However, being a mature technology, solutions that change its specification would be impractical and should be limited to RRM. This dissertation deals with energy efficiency from the standpoint of the battery-limited UE, through the implementation of algorithms related to RRM, notably the scaling of the downlink and uplink channels, and the AR procedure. The resource scheduler proposed for the uplink channel addresses spectrum and transmission fragmentation, reducing the total number of transmissions performed, by accepting a sub-optimal choice of PRBs to be allocated in exchange for maintaining the contiguity of available resources. At the same time, the proposed resource scheduler for the downlink channel allocates resources opportunistically to UEs where the Transmission Time Intervals of the downlink transmission coincides with an uplink transmission, enabling the highly efficient bidirectional consumption state. Finally, two power control mechanisms for the AR procedure that aim to reduce the number of retransmitted preambles were also proposed.
