Sustainability and Education: IC seeks to transform devices previously destined for destruction into connectivity tools.

A partnership between the Federal Revenue Service and Unicamp wants to transform pirate TV Box devices, popularly called “gatonet”, into connectivity equipment that can be used by needy students or even in campus monitoring applications.

The device was disassembled and is being studied by students from the Discovery Laboratory under the supervision of Profª. Dr. Juliana Freitag Borin. Student Igor Borges is already surveying possible adaptations for using the device, such as a low-cost computer.

A batch of 200 devices was delivered to Unicamp and was attended by Prof. doctor Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, Rector of Unicamp and Prof. Ricardo Darab, also a professor at the Institute of Computing. According to Prof. Dahab, there is a range of possibilities for using these devices and many ideas will emerge as they are being evaluated by Unicamp professors and students.

The impacts of this innovative project will be highly beneficial for both sustainability and education.

The project is already having repercussions and was reported on several communication channels.
