A good indicator of the quality of the training of IC Post-Graduation students are the various prizes received in Contests for Master's Dissertations and Doctoral Theses, promoted by scientific computer societies (SBC, IEEE, SBIE, SCOPES, CLEI / UNESCO, SBRC). 

2023

Former doctoral students, Fabrício Matheus Gonçalves and Alysson Bolognesi Prado, together with Prof. Dr. Maria Cecília Calani Baranauskas, had her article selected as Best Article of the 20th Ibero-American Conference WWW/Internet 2023 for the work entitled “From Open Design to Open HCI: Exploring Synergies Through a Systematic Literature Review”.

Former doctoral student, Isaías Bittencourt Felzmann, supervised by Prof. Dr. Lucas Wanner was awarded first place in the doctoral category of the Thesis and Dissertation Competition in Computer Architecture and High Performance Computing (WSCAD-CTD 2023) for his thesis entitled “Architectural Support for Approximate Computing”.

The article “Design of 5G MEC-based Networks with 1:N:K Protection Scheme” by doctoral student Hernâni Delgado Chantre, supervised by Prof. Dr. Nelson Luis Saldanha da Fonseca, was presented at the Technical Section on Telecommunications and Network Analytics Best Paper Award 2022/2023 of the INFORMS 2023 conference.

Former doctoral student Rodrigo Augusto Cardoso da Silva, supervised by Prof. Dr. Nelson Luis Saldanha da Fonseca, was awarded First Place in the CLTD – IX Latin American Doctorate Thesis Competition of the XLIX Latin American Informatics Conference (CLEI 2023) for the thesis entitled “The Fog Node Location Problem”.

Former doctoral student Allan Mariano de Souza together with Prof. Luiz Fernando Bittencourt (Unicamp), Prof. Eduardo Coelho Cerqueira (UFPA), Prof. Antonio Loureiro (UFMG) and Prof. Leandro Villas (Unicamp) were awarded the Best Paper Award of the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC 2023) for the article entitled “Devices, I Choose You: Adaptive Client Selection for Effective Communication in Federated Learning”.

The thesis defended by former doctoral student Carlos Alberto Astudillo Trujillo under the guidance of Prof. Nelson Luis Saldanha da Fonseca was ranked 1st in the sixth edition of the Doctoral Thesis Contest (CTD) of the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC) 2023 for his thesis entitled “Medium Access Control Techniques for Massive Machine-Type Communications in Cellular Networks.”.

The thesis defended by former doctoral student Rodrigo Augusto Cardoso da Silva under the guidance of Prof. Nelson Luis Saldanha da Fonseca was ranked 3rd in the sixth edition of the Doctoral Thesis Contest (CTD) of the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC) 2023 for his thesis entitled “The Fog Node Location Problem”.

The doctoral student Eryck Pedro da Silva, together with his supervisor Prof. doctor Rodolfo Jardim de Azevedo and co-advisor Dr. Ricardo Edgard Caceffo, received Honorable Mention at the III Brazilian Symposium on Computing Education (EduComp 2023) for the article entitled “Is passing the test cases enough? Identification and analysis of comprehension problems in correct codes”.

The thesis defended by former doctoral student Armando Faz Hernandez under the guidance of Prof. Julio Cesar Lopez Hernandez was classified in 2nd place in the 2022 UNICAMP Highlight Thesis Award, in the area of ​​Knowledge, Engineering and Technology of the Computer Science Program and therefore will receive an Honorable Mention for the work entitled “High-Performance Elliptic Curve Cryptography: A SIMD Approach to Modern Curves".

The members of LInterHAD (Laboratory of Human-Digital Artifact Interaction) of the Instituto de Computação received the following awards at the XI Brazilian Congress of Informatics in Education – CBIE 2022:

  • Doctoral student Yusseli Lizeth Méndez Mendoza, together with former student Emanuel Felipe Duarte and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Maria Cecília Calani Baranauskas, received the Best Article Award in “Track 3: Human Factors in Digital Technology in Education” at the XXXIII Brazilian Symposium on Informatics in Education – SBIE 2022, with the article “Evaluating the Perception of Others in a Remote Experience of Interaction: a Pilot Study”.

Former master's student André Gomes Regino, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Julio C. dos Reis, was awarded the 3rd (third) place in the Theses and Dissertations Contest (Dissertation modality) of the XXVIII Brazilian Symposium on Multimedia and Web Systems (WebMedia 2022) for the work entitled “Leveraging Linked Open Data: A Link Maintenance Framework”.

Former master's student Jordão Okuma Barbosa Ferraz Bragantini, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Alexandre Xavier Falcão, received the award for Best Master's Dissertation at the 35th Conference on Graphics, Patterns and Images (SIBGRAPI 2022) for the work entitled “Interactive Image Segmentation: From Graph-based Algorithms to Feature-Space Annotation”.

Doctoral student André Gomes Regino, along with co-authors Rodrigo Oliveira Caus, Victor Hochgreb and Prof. Dr. Julio Cesar dos Reis (IC/Unicamp), received the Best Student Paper Award at the 14th International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (KEOD 2022) for the article “Knowledge Graph-based Product Recommendations on E-commerce Platforms” .

Master's student Antônio Sávio Nascimento Cavalcante, together with Prof. Dr. Breno Bernard Nicolau de França (IC-Unicamp) were awarded the 2nd (second) place of the Best Paper Award of the “XVI Brazilian Symposium on Software Components, Architectures and Reuse (SBCARS 2022)” of the “XIII Brazilian Congress of Software ( CBSOFT 2022)” for the article entitled 'The Mystery framework for developing cooperative Multi-UAV Systems'.

The authors Eryck Pedro da Silva (PhD student), Rodolfo Jardim de Azevedo (Professor of the Program) and Ricardo Edgard Caceffo (Post-Doctoral Student of the IC), received the award “Best Article in the Track of Research Articles” at the II Brazilian Symposium of Education in Computing (EduComp 2022) for the article 'Analysis of Topics Most Discussed in Introduction to Programming in Brazilian Federal Universities'.

The student Allan M. de Souza (PhD), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Leandro Aparecido Villas (IC-Unicamp) and co-supervision of Prof. Dr. Torsten Braun (University of Bern) received the JAACS Annual Best Doctoral Thesis 2021 Award (JOINT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION IN COMPUTER SCIENCE) for work entitled “Towards a Personalized Multi-objective Vehicle Traffic Re-routing System".

Master's student William Felipe da Cunha Tavares, together with his advisor, Prof. doctor Edson Borin (IC/Unicamp) and his co-supervisor Dr. Marcio Roberto Miranda Assis (SERPRO) received the BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARD award from the 14th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing – UCC 2021 for their work entitled “Leveraging vCPU-Utilization Rates to Select Cost-Efficient VMs for Parallel Workloads”.

Master's student Matheus Diógenes Andrade, along with his advisor, Prof. doctor Fábio Luiz Usberti (IC/Unicamp) received an Honorable Mention in the Contest for Best Master's Dissertation at the 53rd SBPO Brazilian Symposium on Operational Research, for their work entitled “Formulations for the Green Vehicle Routing Problem".

Students Pedro Olímpio Pinheiro, Alexsandro Oliveira Alexandrino and Andre Rodrigues Oliveira, along with Prof. doctor Cid C. de Souza (IC/Unicamp) and Prof. doctor Zanoni Dias (IC/Unicamp), received the Best Paper Award at the “LIII Brazilian Symposium on Operational Research (SBPO 2021)”, for their work entitled “Algorithms for the Maximum Eulerian Cycle Decomposition Problem".

Master's student Matheus Jun Ota, together with his advisor, Prof. doctor Flávio Keidi Miyazawa (IC/Unicamp) and his co-advisor, Prof. doctor Phablo Fernando Soares Moura (UFMG) received the Best Master's Dissertation Award from the 53rd SBPO Brazilian Symposium on Operational Research, for their work entitled “THE BALANCED CONNECTED K-PARTITION PROBLEM: POLYHEDRA AND ALGORITHMS”.

The doctoral student, Otávio Oliveira Napoli together with Gustavo C. Pinton (master at IC/Unicamp) and Prof. Dr. Edson Borin (IC-Unicamp) received the Best Paper award at the 1st Workshop on Cloud Computing (WCC 2021) held at the IEEE 33rd International Symposium on Computer Architecture and High Performance Computing for the work entitled “CLAP-Bot: a framework for automatic optimization of high-performance applications elastic on the Clouds".

Students Vanderson Martins do Rosário (PhD), Thais A. Silva Camacho (Masters), Otávio O. Nápoli (PhD) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Edson Borin (IC-Unicamp) received an Honorable Mention at the XXII Symposium on High Performance Computing Systems (WSCAD-2021) held at the IEEE 33rd International Symposium on Computer Architecture and High Performance Computing for the work entitled “Fast and Low-cost Search for Efficient Cloud Configurations for HPC Workloads."

PhD student Luciana Barbieri, along with her advisor, Prof. doctor Edmundo Roberto Mauro Madeira (IC/Unicamp), Kleber Stroeh (Master IC/Unicamp) and Prof. doctor Wil van der Aalst (RWTH Aachen University) received the Best Paper award from The Sixth International Workshop on Process Querying, Manipulation, and Intelligence (PQMI 2021) for their work entitled “Towards a Natural Language Conversational Interface for Process Mining”.

The doctoral student Kleber Kruger, together with his advisor, Prof. doctor Rodolfo Jardim de Azevedo (IC/Unicamp) and Prof. doctor Ricardo Pannain (IC/Unicamp) received the prize for Best Paper at the XXII Symposium on High Performance Computing Systems (WSCAD-2021) for their work entitled “DONUTS: An Efficient Method of Checkpointing in Non-Volatile Memories".

Doctoral student Samuel Botter Martins, former student at the Laboratory of Image Data Science (LIDS), supervised by professors Dr. Alexandre Xavier Falcão (Unicamp) and Dr. Alex Telea (Utrecht/Netherlands) was awarded first place in the Workshop of Theses and Dissertations at the 34th Conference on Graphics, Patterns, and Images (SIBGRAPI 2021) for the work entitled “Unsupervised Brain Anomaly Detection in MR Images”.

The student Matheus Jun Ota, supervised by Professor Dr. Flavio Keidi Miyazawa and co-supervised by Dr. Phablo Fernando Soares Moura, was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Master's Dissertation category at the XXXIV Theses and Dissertations Contest (CTD 2021) of the XLI Congress of the Brazilian Society of Computation (CSBC 2021) for the work entitled “The Balanced Connected k-Partition Problem: Polyhedra and Algorithms”.

Lucas Wanner (advisor), received the Best Interactive Presentation award, for the work entitled “AxPIKE: Instruction-level Injection and Evaluation of Approximate Computing” presented at the conference at Design, Automation, and Test in Europe (DATE) 2021.

Doctoral student Rodrigo Augusto Cardoso da Silva, together with his advisor, Prof. Nelson Luis Saldanha da Fonseca, received the Google Latin America Research Awards in 2020, in the Internet of Things category for their work entitled “Reduction of service latency by the employment of fixed-wings UAVs”.

Master student André Gomes Regino, supervised by prof. Julio Cesar dos Reis (IC-Unicamp), received the award for best master's thesis project at the Thesis and Dissertation Workshop on Ontologies at the 13th Ontology Research Seminar in Brazil - ONTOBRAS 2020, for the work entitled “Link Maintenance in the Semantic Web ”.

Master student Silvana Trindade, guided by prof. Nelson Luis Saldanha da Fonseca (IC-Unicamp), received "Honorable Mention" for his dissertation entitled "Resource Allocation in Space-Division Multiplexing-Based Elastic Optical Networks" in the Thesis and Dissertation Competition of the 38th Edition of the Brazilian Computer Network Symposium and Distributed Systems (SBRC 2020).

PhD student Ademar Takeo Akabane, supervised by prof. Leandro Aparecido Villas (IC-Unicamp) and coordinated by prof. Edmundo Roberto Mauro Madeira (IC-Unicamp), received the “Honorable Mention” award for his doctoral dissertation entitled “Collaborative and Infrastructure-less Vehicular Traffic Rerouting for Intelligent Transportation Systems” in the Thesis and Dissertations Competition at the 38th Edition of the Brazilian Symposium of Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC 2020).

Students Gabriel Oliveira and Rafael Padilha together with co-authors André Dorte, Luis Cereda, Luiz Miyazaki, Mauricio Lopes and professor Zanoni Dias received the award Best Paper Award No. Brazilian Symposium on Bioinformatics http://bsb.sbc.org.br/2020/ (BSB 2020) for the article entitled “COVID-19 X-ray Image Diagnostic with Deep Neural Networks”.

The student Gabriel Moraes Barros, guided by the professor. Esther Luna Colombini received the Best Dissertation Award (First place) in the SBC Robotics Thesis and Dissertation Contest (CTDR / 2020) for the work entitled “Reinforcement and Imitation Learning Applied to Autonomous Aerial Robot Control”.

The student Hudson Martins Silva Bruno, guided by professor. Esther Luna Colombini received the Second Best Dissertation Award (Second place) at the SBC Robotics Thesis and Dissertation Contest (CTDR / 2020) for the work entitled “LIFT-SLAM: a deep-learning feature-based visual SLAM method“.

The student Alceu Emanuel Bissoto, addressing the teacher. Sandra Ávila, received the award for best master's dissertation in the WTD of SIBGRAPI 2020 for the dissertation entitled “Improving skin lesion analysis with generative adversarial networks”

The student Antônio Carlos Guimarães Junior guided by Profs. Diego F. The IC Team, led by student Natanael Ramos and composed by student Raí Caetano de Jesus and teachers Cid Carvalho de Souza, Fábio Usberti and Pedro Jussieu de Rezende obtained 4th place (out of a total of 15 teams from different countries) in the 1st Workshop on Open Problems and Hard Instance Challenges of the Symposium on Computational Geometry 2019 held in Portland, USA, from June 18 to 21, 2019.

The student José Ramon Trindade Pires, guided by prof. Anderson de Rezende Rocha and coordinated by prof. Jacques Wainer, received the “Best Doctoral Thesis” award for the thesis entitled “Image Analysis Techniques for Detecting Diabetic Retinopathy” in the Thesis and Dissertation Contest (CTD 2019) of the SBC Congress
(CSBC 2019).

The student Marcos Roberto e Souza, guided by prof. Hélio Pedrini, received the “Best Master's Dissertation” award for the dissertation entitled “Digital Video Stabilization: Algorithms and Evaluation” in the Thesis and Dissertations Contest (CTD 2019) of the SBC Congress (CSBC 2019).

The student Alceu Emanuel Bissoto and profa. Sandra Avila (advisor) received the “Best Paper Award” for the work entitled “(De) Constructing Bias on Skin Lesion Datasets”, at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) conference, at ISIC Skin Image Analysis Workshop, in June / 2019 .

The student Diego Oliveira Rodrigues, guided by prof. Leandro Villas, received the “Honorable Mention” award for his dissertation entitled “SMAFramework: Framework for the Integration of Urban Data Aware of the Space-Time Correlation” in the Thesis and Dissertation Competition in the 37th edition of the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems ( SBRC).

Student Wellington Lobato Junior, along with Joahannes Costa (IC / UNICAMP), Denis Rosário (UFPA), Eduardo Cerqueira (UFPA) and Leandro Villas (IC / UNICAMP - advisor) received the award for best article at the “IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM 2018) ”by the article“ Comparative Analysis of DSRC and VLC for Video Dissemination in Platoon of Vehicles ”.

The student Marcus Botacin received the award for “Best Master's dissertation from July 2016 to June 2018” at the SBSeg 2018 event. His dissertation had the theme “Hardware-Assisted Malware Analysis” and his advisors were Paulo de Geus (UNICAMP - Brazil) and André Grégio (UFPR - Brazil).

The student Felipe Alves da Louza, obtained an honorable mention from the CAPES Thesis Award 2018 in the area of ​​Computer Science for the thesis “Engineering Augmented Suffix Sorting Algorithm” defended in 2017, under the guidance of Guilherme Pimentel Telles and Coorientation by Simon Gog.

Students Isaias Bittencourt Felzmann and Matheus M. Former students Daniel Moreira, Mauricio Perez and Daniel Moraes, together with researcher Vanessa Testoni (Samsung) and professors Sandra Eliza Fontes de Avila, Eduardo Valle (FEEC), Siome Goldenstein and Anderson Rocha, received the “Inventores UNICAMP” award , in the Licensed Technology category (Samsung company), for the patent “Multimodal and real-time method for sensitive media content filtering”.

Doctor Alysson B. Prado, supervised by Professor M. Cecilia C. Baranauskas (co-author), obtained an honorable mention for a complete article at the XVI Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computer Systems (IHC 2017) with the theme “Blending theories towards understanding and designing socio-technical scenarios ”(full article; 51 accepted from 157 submitted).

Students Eliana Moreira, Marleny Carbajal and Bruna Panaggio, received an honorable mention in the Design Competition of the XVI Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computer Systems (IHC 2017) for the article Tan2Talk: Using Tangible Interface to Work Alternative and Augmentative Communication via Playful ”( finalist of 45 papers).

Dr. Rafael Auler, supervised by prof. Edson Borin, took second place in the Doctoral Thesis Competition of the XVIII Symposium on High Performance Computing Systems (WSCAD) 2017.

PhD student Rafael Sousa, along with professors Fernando Pereira, Marcio Pereira and Guido Araújo (advisor) received the award for best scientific article in the 2017 edition of the International Symposium on Computer Architecture and High Performance Computing (SBAC-PAD) for the article “ Data Coherence Analysis and Optimization for Heterogeneous Computing ”.

The student Marcelo Palma Salas, guided by prof. The student José Ramon Trindade Pires, supervised by Prof. Anderson de Rezende Rocha, obtained the 3rd place in the Thesis and Dissertation Contest, with the dissertation "Diabetic retinopathy image quality assessment, detection, screening and referral", granted by the Brazilian Computer Society.

IC students were awarded on Facebook São Paulo Hackathon on May 3, 2014.

IC masters Mirella da Silva and Gilvan Vieira took first place in the competition and will participate in the Hackathon Finals in Menlo Park, California in November. The project developed by them aimed to use information from the Facebook profile for travel planning.

Students Vitor Machado (Computer Science, IC), Maurício Bertanha (Computer Science, IC), Gabrielle Dias (Information Systems, PUC-Campinas) and David Aparício (Computer Engineering, IC) received an honorable mention for the project that used Facebook as a tool to find missing people.

The Facebook Hackathon is a programming competition where each team must create and develop a product (or prototype) within 24 hours. The works are then judged by the criteria of originality, evolution during the competition and presentation. In all, 20 teams participated in the hackathon, including students from ITA and USP.

The dissertation of former IC master student Tiago Pedroso da Cruz de Andrade, entitled “Integration of Wireless Sensor Networks with Radio-on-Fiber technology”, was awarded the second place in the XXI Latin American Thesis Contest of Maestría (CLTM) promoted by CLEI 2014.

Two IC students were members of a group that won the HACKATON 2013 marathon promoted by FACEBOOK in Brazil; the competition aimed to develop a product in 24 hours. The winning students were: Eduardo Henrique de Pontes Ellery [Master's] advising from Prof. Dr. Ricardo Dahab and Gabriel Dietrich Cavalcante [PhD] supervising Prof. Dr. Paulo Lício de Geus. Conference on Biometrics (ICB), prestigious international conference in Biometrics due to the algorithm developed in partnership with Univ. from Harvard.

Doctoral student Joana Esther Gonzales Malaverri supervised by Profª. Drª. Cláudia Bauzer Medeiros won the award for the 3rd best article in SBC's GeoInfo (XIII Brazilian Symposium on Geoinformatics), in Campos do Jordão, with the article Data Quality in Agriculture Applications.

On 10/11/2012 at the Latin American Regional Programming Marathon, held in Londrina (PR), the IC team “Os Cartolas” won the second overall place, solving eight of the ten problems of the race. The team is made up of Marcelo Galvão Póvoa, Thiago Cavalcante and Douglas Oliveira Santos, and coached by Murilo Adriano Vasconcelos, both with a Master's degree. With this achievement, the team won a spot in the World Final of the International Collegiate Programming Competition (ACM-ICPC), which will be held in Saint Petersburg in June 2013.

Former doctoral student Roberto Alves Gallo Filho and master student Henrique de Medeiros Kawakami finished in the Intel Global Challenge 2012 competition held in UC-Berkeley, with the Start-Up WebProtection “SurfDog” (www.surfdog-wp.com) ranked among the top 8 global teams, being the only pure computer science team.

Former doctoral student Diego de Freitas Aranha who was supervised by Prof. Dr. Julio César Lópes Hernández; won first place in the Ph.D. Thesis and Dissertation Competition, from SBSeg 2012 (Brazilian Symposium on Information Security and Computer Systems 2012.
