Its function is to deflect the weight of the overlying stones and soil to the side walls, away from the lintel stones (which could otherwise crack and collapse). The inside of that space is undressed because it was originally hidden, as the space was closed by thin walls on each end. Some of these closing walls still survive in the interior side of some of those monuments. The door was meant to look rectangular, with a flat top.
