Bitcoin is up 8.5% today, wonder if this news has anything to do with it. I'd welcome an upward trend that might come with restored confidence.

Hm, perhaps the chief officers and/or owners of some other not-so-clean bitcoin enterprises saw the FCC papers served to BFL, finally realized that it was real and could happen to them too, and therefore rushed to convert their ill-gained dollars into bitcoins in order to put them (and themselves) beyond the reach of the law.

(Well, it is a theory, right?)

What if no questions remain?
Didn't we ask this question several times before?

Here is another (admittedly not very convincing) theory for the cause of the rally:  officers and owners of some not-so-clean bitcoin enterprises out there saw the confirmation of the BFL raid, and rushed to convert their dollars into bitcoins in order to move them out of the reach of the law.

So the ATH in new members was 45,800 new members added in March 2014?  That's interesting.  It suggests a delayed reaction in mass consciousness between a price peak (December) and making the decision to become actively involved in the discussion...

March was when the MtGOX collapse hit mainstream media.

The FTC was just a year too late... They should have been shut down months, if not a year ago.... This will protect new buyers but current "investors" that are waiting on a product or a refund will probably get screwed.

Unfortunately that is usually the rule: prosecutors and regulators will step in only when a scam is falling apart.  If they acted earlier, it would be very difficult for them to prove in court that the business *would* cause the clients to lose money if allowed to continue.    It was so with Madoff, with TelexFree in my country, ...

Even now, it may not be entirely trivial for the FTC to prove in court that BFL scammed their customers.  See their "defense" earlier in this thread.

EDIT: see also the court papers of the process that ended with Sonny's parole being extended.  The judge refrained from sending him to prison because he was convinced that BFL could stil make good on their clients.

At this point the person in charge of taking over should be fired. You can still order from their website. There is no notice on their site about what is happening.

Big mistake.

Now my knowledge is 14 years out of date, going back to the dot com crash, but the way is used to work is that as of this moment, for any funds coming in, the receiver is responsible. Not the FTC not BFL he is.
To still have the ability to send them more BTC is a major screw up. IMHO.
Now, things could have changed but still...

Like MtGOX.  That is ONE very unethical thing (choosing words carefully to avoid libel) that Mark did: let people deposit money and bitcoin, to the last minute, without telling them that MtGOX was insolvent in a big way.

About the rally itself: I kinda feel that this was orchestrated by a single entity, probably in order to induce a short squeeze. I doubt very much that this was "organic" buying by people who suddenly all decided to buy in unison. Or maybe I'm wrong and it was caused by a bunch of people buying because of the paypal news, but I doubt it...

The rally that started May 20 too consisted of a few episodes of intense buying, 1-2 hour long, that drove the price up  by ~50$ each time; separated by "organic-looking" periods where the price just wandered about, often with a downward trend.

Could this rally be the  first of another (mini-)bubble like that?

Did you read the fine print?
What fine print?
1429  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 23, 2014, 07:20:15 PM
This rally seems to have started in the West, while China was sleeping.

The price started to rise gradually around 17:36 UTC on Bitfinex, BTC-e, Bitstamp, but on relatievly low volume.  Huobi and OKCoin gave no sign of change.

Big buys started at 17:40, and only then Huobi and OKCoin suddenly started to rise.

crypto currency and anonymity  is a "do not trust" system but come to think of it rpietila is the only person with a name, picture and info about him on this thread..i'm not saying that we follow him, maybe we can learn something from him.

Actually there are a few people in this forum who are open about their identities.  Methinks they tend to be the best ones.  Wink

Why don't we start a quote pyramid?
Why should we?
Ok, but am I first or is ineededausername first?
Can someone ask dayfall to define first?
dayfall, can you define first?
What are the chances of dayfall defining the word 'first' in the form of a question, let alone supplying his answer within the boundries of this newly created quote pyramid?
Who is Dayfall?
I guess you didn't read the pyramid building manual, did you, netrin?
Oh shiznitz, did I fucznitz up the world's greatest pyramid?
Let's go with that for a moment, do you feel like shiznitx contemplating a fucnitz of the world's greatest pyramid? Or was it from your childhood?
Could you ask one question at a time?
why would he do that?
Would McLuhan have asked "Who cares about yesterday's questions?"?

Federal Trade Commission closes Butterfly Labs - confirmed with official doc:

At the request of the Federal Trade Commission, a federal court has shut down Butterfly Labs, a Missouri-based company that allegedly deceptively marketed specialized computers designed to produce Bitcoins, a payment system sometimes referred to as “virtual currency.”

1433  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero Exploit Confirmed Independently on: September 23, 2014, 01:41:50 PM
the FBI should not be in the protection of Monero
but it would take the case seriously
because in addition to a ddos evidence that has been BCX
"the nickname of polo has been confirmed by him a few days ago"
Yes, the FBI would be interested in the DDOS attack on Poloniex (but see my previous post).

Quote
if it proceeds and steal the coin wallet then this is a robbery
and since we know who it was by his own admission
for the fbi will find it as a game the fbi will move because this is a robbery
not to protect monerocoin
as examples, you can take the latest news outlet recently
that person who cheated in 2012 several users who had bitcoin
because the FBI intervened ??
for the money, not for bitcoin

The FBI has stated publicly (in the NY hearings, maybe?) that they are not worried about bitcoin, presumably because they can trace it.  I would add "quite the opposite", since, thanks to bitcoin, they undid a well-known international drug operation, nabbed Shrem, Faiella, Ulich, Joop, and who knows who else, and confiscated at least 170'000 BTC of drug profits, worth now some 60 M USD, which will eventually go to the US Treasury -- all mostly from the comfort of their desks.

Monero is another matter, since it is being developed specifically to address that "weakness" of bitcoin.  I would be surprised if the FBI is as indifferent towards it as it is towards bitcoin.

AFAIK, the PirateAt40 scam was not prosecuted as a cybercrime attack,  but as a classical ponzi: namely that he solicited investments with false promises (it does not matter in what form) and just pocketed them.  I don't know of any case of bitcoins stolen by hacking that has been investigated by the FBI; is there any?  (One big obstacle that I see is proving that a theft took place: how does the victim prove that the bitcoins that were at address X were his property, and that the address Y where they are now is not his?)
1434  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero Exploit Confirmed Independently on: September 23, 2014, 01:17:43 PM
It's also possible that Poloniex is run by people who would be politically opposed to involving the state in what they might see as their personal affairs too.
Irrelevant since the FBI could still get involved any way, and even that is irrelevant if the intent of Polo attack was to acquire reputation insurance so he can rescind his attack.
Poloniex is indeed registered in Whitefish, Montana, but are the servers located there?  (For comparison, Bitstamp is registered in the UK but the servers are said to be in Slovenia.)   I cannot tell from their registry entry:
https://app.mt.gov/cgi-bin/bes/besCertificate.cgi?action=detail&bessearch=C246785&trans_id=besa14265131454725500
If the servers are outside the US, would a DDOS on them fall within the FBI jurisdiction?

They could push transactions onto the network with no fee through EMC.  EMC is nothing now so it would take a long time for them to accomplish that now but how much of the total network was it back then?

If they own 1% of the total hashrate, they can process any zero-fee transaction with less than 1 day expected delay (if it is not processed by some other generous miner before that).
1436  Economy / Economics / Re: Would u pay in bitcoin? on: September 23, 2014, 06:18:48 AM
Slovenia’s biggest Bank NLB published article ''Bitcoin: Is this the beginning of the end of the money?''.
But don't get excited. Slovenia is small and the bank is not doing well.

The article retells Andreessen's scenario of someone paying in bitcoin at the supermarket cashier by pointing his smartphone camera at the QR address on the sales terminal's screen.   Shouldn't the supermarket wait for at least one confirmation before acknowledging the payment?

Dear FBI:

We are a community who is developing Monero, a cryptocoin that will (a) make it impossible for someone to steal someone else's  money, and (b) make it impossible for you or anyone else to identify the source or destination af any payment, even if it is not connected to criminal or terrorist activity.
Bolded section reveals much about your opinion of the relationship of government to the governed.

I think it reveals how disconnected some people in this community are from reality.

I should have added also
Quote
(c) allow the hiding of revenue from the IRS, (c) provide an unlicensed service for money transmittal across state boundaries,  (d) allow the unreported transmittal of arbitrary amounts of money across national borders, (e)  provide banking services unencumbered by KYC/AML procedures, ...

You really expect the FBI to help and protect the development of Monero?
1438  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero Exploit Confirmed Independently on: September 22, 2014, 11:47:23 PM
I hope that BCX does nothing because the first thing you will do after the attack
is to report to the FBI the situation because remember that the coin on its wallett
are money so it's a robbery

You mean, something like this:

Quote
Dear FBI:

We are a community who is developing Monero, a cryptocoin that will (a) make it impossible for someone to steal someone else's  money, and (b) make it impossible for you or anyone else to identify the source or destination af any payment, even if it is not connected to criminal or terrorist activity.

The coin is not yet fully developed and tested, but some of us are already using it as currency and investment, even though it is not registered or regulated in any way by the US government.

Recently, an anonymous user known by the aliases "BitcoinExpress" or "BCX" claimed to have found a flaw in our design.  Someone, who could be him or not, perhaps exploiting that flaw or not, apparently caused somehow some of the coins to be moved from some addresses that we claim to be ours to some addresses that we cannot identify.  He or them also exposed the identities of some monero users.

We ask you to track down the person(s) responsible and prosecute him or them fro theft and other applicable cybercrimes.  We count on your help to ensure that we can continue the development and use of Monero without fear that he or them may find another flaw in the future.

Let me guess: They invested in crypto and now they are trying to pump it  Smiley

I have read somewhere in this forum that the Bitstamp owners are the richest people in Slovenia.  Is that true (or somewhat close to the truth)?

who is kermit the frog?
What's Kermit the frog got to do with climate march?
Kermit the frog did a climate march?
Did you not see Kermit with the First Man?

"Is that a penis parading how much you like me?"
Did you mean Kermit with the First Lady?
why is she called First Lady?
Didn't you know Michael Obama is a man?
Is she he? What about this kermit toad there... is it a he, or a she? ... or both?
As a non-human animal, shouldn't he she it be a 'it'?
Do animals make love? Or do they only make sex?
So, you're trying to tell me that toads and lizards mate each other?
Can we exclude that possibility between felt toads and alien lizards from another dimension?
